Dr. Nico J. Schoemaker is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Zoological Medicine at Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in the Netherlands.
He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Utrecht University in 1994, followed by an internship in Companion Animal Medicine and a residency in Avian Medicine and Surgery.
Dr. Schoemaker is a Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine (ECZM) in both Small Mammal and Avian specialties and a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) in Avian Practice.
In 2003, he completed his PhD with a dissertation on "Hyperadrenocorticism in Ferrets," presenting new hypotheses on the disease's etiology and prevention.
His research focuses on adrenal tumors in ferrets, various clinical topics in avian and small mammal medicine, and feather-damaging behavior in parrots. Actively engaged in clinical practice, teaching, and research, Dr. Schoemaker has authored numerous articles and book chapters and is a sought-after speaker at international conferences and workshops.ç
