Prof. Patty Lathan

Dr. Patty Lathan, VMD, MS, DACVIM (SAIM) is a Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine at Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU Vet Med). She joined LSU Vet Med in August 2023, bringing extensive expertise in veterinary endocrinology.

Dr. Lathan earned her Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Texas A&M University in 1998, followed by her Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002. She then completed a Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Internship at Mississippi State University and a Small Animal Internal Medicine Residency at Purdue University, where she also obtained a Master of Science in 2007. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in Small Animal Internal Medicine.

Her clinical and research interests focus on veterinary endocrinology, particularly in: Treatment and monitoring of diabetes mellitus Management of Addison’s disease and Cushing’s syndrome Reducing side effects associated with steroid use in dogs.

Dr. Lathan has authored numerous articles and book chapters on veterinary endocrinology. Notable publications include "Laboratory Diagnosis of Thyroid and Adrenal Disease" in Veterinary Clinics of North America (2023) and co-authorship of the "2018 AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats" in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association.
