Prof. Valery Scharf

Dr. Valery F. Scharf is an Associate Professor of Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery at North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Earth Systems from Stanford University and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Texas A&M University. Following her DVM, she completed a rotating internship at The Ohio State University and a surgical residency at the University of Florida, where she also earned a Master of Science degree focusing on translational oncology.

A Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (DACVS), Dr. Scharf specializes in minimally invasive surgery, surgical oncology, and endocrine neoplasia. Her research explores companion animals as models of environmental exposure, contributing to advancements in both veterinary and human medicine.

Dr. Scharf has been at the forefront of developing minimally invasive surgical techniques, including pioneering procedures for peritoneal-pericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH) in dogs. She is also deeply committed to surgical education, employing innovative teaching strategies to train the next generation of veterinary surgeons.
